That Thera cane is interesting. I had never herd of them before I read your post about it. I’ll be interested in whether you like it or not.

Yes, I’m fanatically for this funny looking stick. Not only does it make it easy to reach any sore spot, even on the back, but by design it is also very easy to apply as much leverage as you need by clamping down on the handles.

After seeing several people try to use it (after being told what it is for…), I’d say that this whole leverage thing is not necessarily intuitive. There is much more to using it than picking it up, selecting a suitable knob and rubbing back and forth. In fact, in most cases it is enough just to put a knob on the sore spot, hang down on the cane and then tilt the other end up and down to produce the kind of milking effect needed. I found the video very useful in learning how to do this, although the Trigger Point Workbook also has some great pictures.

That being said, for certain spots I still prefer a tennis ball (gluteus) or the thumbsaver (shoulders). I wouldn’t say you can’t treat trigger points without a Thera cane, but it sure is a great tool and a joy to use. Plus you can scare the neighbors with it.
