Strange. Very strange.

Just did a few searches in Chinese in an attempt to locate more info on this but found nothing useful. Would be interesting to know how heavy the weights were and whether there were any other animals contending for the coveted weightlifting trophy (a banana?).

And besides, why can’t the reporters get it right? That, in the pic, is a chimp and not an orangutan.

…and I think your writing of the city’s name might be more accurate than the caption as well. Oh, well, it IS a FREE paper…

Hmmm… I was thinking the very same thing about this being one shady orangutan. Orangutans have a clear shade of orange (which is NOT the reason why they are called orangutans), are hairier and should be a bit bigger. Here’s a good link with pictures of both chimps and orangutans. Thanks for pointing this out.
And yes, they got the city name spelling wrong too. I might not be much of an “apeologist”, but I know wrong pinyin when I see it.

Looks like the real orangutans were too busy Thai boxing to join this weightlifting meet (BBC story). Thanks to Scott for mentioning this curiosity.
