I’ve never actually considered dumping the bar over the head in the squat - and I don’t think I’ll be trying it any time soon (not with reasonable weight at least). What was their reasoning in the MILO article?

I believe dumping the bar forward is the classic way of getting out of a squat when done outside of a rack, probably because you have a measure of control over the bar that is very different from dumping it behind you where it might hit god knows what. That article in MILO was geared primarily to olympic lifters, a breed known to rarely train in power racks. Being at the summer cottage, I don’t have the issue at hand, but if memory serves the article was about the importance of being able to get out from anything you can squat or something along those lines, also had good technique pointers on how this is done in practice. I’ll look it up once home at the end of August, feel free to remind me if I forget. I’ve seen a clip somewhere of a powerlifter dumping a safety squat bar forward in this manner by just ducking under it - looked very effortless.

Congrats Kris, looks like next week should give you some good new maxes. After that second second of squats I think you have lots left in the tank there.

I would have to agree with Stinn on this one… Really. That looked like you could’ve done another. However, and this is just my opinion, I think it might be that you’re being a bit cautious with your back. Which, of course, is never a bad idea…

Agreed, could probably have dished out another rep in the squat. The only reason I didn’t was that the program only called for two reps, so not a matter of playing it safe with the back, at least in this case. Generally, I think I have gotten over my fear of reinjury and have gone all out in the squat in recent months. I do live with the recognition that my back might give in at any moment like it has in the past though, but I don’t think it stops me from giving all I have as long as the lift doesn’t feel like it will hurt me - but who knows, the mind is a mysterious place. This week is still up to a single according to the program, the week after that I will see where the bar meets the pins.
