Incidentally, won’t the pit fill up with water after the winter snow melts?

I did consider putting in some drainage channels, but I would think the water will be absorbed into the ground fairly quickly. This might just be wishful thinking as the bottom of the pit is essentially former seabed consisting of packed mud (my grandfather used to row a boat just past Toffe’s Gym in his youth - post-glacial rebound…). Guess we’ll see next spring. That said, the water could just prove to give some nice extra resistance.
